Young Trio Ready to Battle for Many Years John Down As few as there are competing,
it would seem that
junior women’s golf in
Alberta will be sending forth some
sweet swingers during the next
three or four years. While 18-year-old Kelly Amundrud of
the Country Club made it a
no contest in last week’s provincial
jig at Canyon Meadows, she could
hear the footsteps of 15-year-olds Jennifer Haand Kristy Macdonald
and 14-year-old Christie Lin.
It would seem those three will
be duking it out for some time not
only on the local and provincial
links, but also nationally. If there was a surprise, maybe
even a disappointment, it was in
the number of girls who entered
or qualified to enter the provincial
tournament. Just 56! From what we
hear, participation by young girls
in the grand ol’science of divot
digging isn’t what it used to be and
clubs are coming up with all kinds
of little schemes to get the girls to
pick up the sticks. Which brings us to the Youth
Golf and Adventure programs that
have been launched by Fairmont
Hot Springs Resort.
Although not pointed specifically at
girls, director of golf Peter
Smith and the Fairmont deep-thinkers
have come up with a program
that combines golf lessons
and play with team-building activities,
bear awareness, survival skills
training, hiking and other outdoor
fun activities. “We are giving kids a different
experience with golf,” says Smith.
“We’re giving them an opportunity
to try it, along with many other activities
so it’s much less intimidating
than a three-day, golf-intensive
program.” The “retreats” go weekly through
the rest of July and all of August.
For $199 a head, the kids receive
two golf lessons, three nine-hole
rounds on the Creekside course,
three lunches, an adventure program, a professional guide, camp T-shirt and assorted other activities. Sounds like a whole lot of fun, even for the girls.
