Buyers lining up for resort projects Kelowna has become a hub of activity for recreational property, with many major resort developments now underway, including: - Manteo Resort -- Eleven years after opening its doors, this 102-room hotel/villa complex hard against the shore of Lake Okanagan and minutes from downtown Kelowna on Lakeshore Road is expanding again. On an adjacent property is the 48-room Lakeshore Inn, which was purchased by Manteo owners The Rykon Group from a Vancouver real estate investment property. Bill Eager, projects manager for Rykon, says there are no immediate plans for the property but Rykon has some pretty definite ideas about what it would like to see happen. There's more value in the property than in continuing with their specific motel market, he says. But the property is zoned for six storeys, so 65 to 80 units is possible. One long-time resident is likely to be keeping an eye on the progress of the expansion. Andre the Duck has been a resident of the Manteo property for the last seven years and is a fixture on or near the patio of the resort's dining room. Always a popular resort destination for Calgarians, Manteo Resort has a private beach and marina, dining room, waterfront boardwalk, clubhouse, waterslide, indoor/outdoor pools, hot tubs, movie theatre and fitness centre. Within walking distance are the Summerhill and Cedar Creek wineries. In 1996, Manteo consisted of 24 villas. Four years later, the four-storey hotel portion was added. Today, it caters to corporate meetings and retreats as well as family vacations. As plans move ahead for further growth, the Manteo complex will continue to change the waterfront of this Okanagan city. "We've always been at the heart of the Mission District and we could be under construction by spring and going to the marketplace as early as June," says Eager. "I guess you could say we're involved in the ongoing urban renewal of this part of the city." For more information, visit www.manteo.com.
