The Globe and Mail, September 19, 2007 Vineyard home sites overlooking Okanagan Lake By Thomasina Barnes Wine lovers looking for an all-season resort community to call home may be interested in the Belago, a collection of 18 vineyard home sites at the Rise in Vernon. The Rise, a master-planned resort community from Okanagan Hills Development Corp., aims to create the ultimate Okanagan lifestyle by mixing golf, water and wine. The 1,200-unit project already has a Fred Couples Signature Golf Course, the first in Western Canada, and plans a private beach club on Okanagan Lake. "While there are many resorts that include a golf course, there are precious few that combine wine, golf and the beach," says Leona Snider, president and CEO of the Rise. The 1/4- to ½ -acre Belago single-family home sites line the hillside adjacent to the development's vineyards, with views over Okanagan Lake. Prices begin at $399,999 for the property lots. "Homeowners at Belago will feel as though they own the vineyard, as it is right in their backyard," says Ms. Snider, who understands that "for many, wine is more than a beverage - it's a passion." Construction of the development's private winery, the Cellars at the Rise, is scheduled for completion in 2009. This year, the vineyards are expanding to 17 acres and by 2010, the goal is to have 25 acres of red- and white-grape varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris. Belago homeowners will have access to the winery's VIP tasting room, visitor centre and storage cellars. "Belago offers a life experience for those who want to build and live in a community that provides the ultimate experience for wine lovers," Ms. Snider says. The development site will also gives buyers proximity to world-class ski resorts, fishing and other outdoor recreation, as well as the urban amenities of nearby Vernon, which is a 10-minute drive away.
