Fore The Nature Trust of B.C.

Riverside Golf Course hosted 21 teams last Thursday at the season opening fundraiser “Fore The Nature Trust of B.C.”. Pat McCormick, on behalf of the Fairmont Hot Springs, co-chaired the event with Carmen Purdy, Director of The Nature Trust. Many local businesses provided community support with auction items and prizes. Spirits were raised along with over $10,000 for this leading B.C. land conservation organization which has extensive land holdings in the Kootenays.

“At least there was no snow- just a little hail,” said Robin Wilson, past chair of The Nature Trust. “The weather cooperated perfectly but unfortunately my drive did not.”

Golfers enjoyed a scramble format best ball game.

The winners were:

Women’s Team: Wilda Schab (FHS), Robin Wilson (VAN), Dee Conklin (RHS), Wendy Booth (FHS);

Women’s Long Drive: Michael Ann Boyer (FHS);

Women’s Closest to the Pin: Wilda Schab (FHS);

Men’s Team: Duane Storcer (FHS), Andy Chisholm (FHS), John Shaw (FHS), Robert Swan (FHS);

Men’s Long Drive: Trevor Parry (INV); and

Men’s Closest to the Pin: Jarred Minke (FHS).

This event was made possible compliments of the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. Peter Smith, Director of Golf Operations, welcomed all the players at the windup buffet. He noted that this is a fabulous opportunity for golfers to have fun while at the same time helping The Nature Trust continue its good work.

For over 38 years, The Nature Trust has been acquiring and managing ecologically significant land in British Columbia. One of their landmark properties is the 10,000 acre Hoodoos which is a well known place to hike. The Nature Trust will be hosting a hike on August 16 to benefit work on the Hoodoos. For more information on The Nature Trust of B.C. and upcoming events see www.naturetrust.bc.ca or call toll free 1-866-288-7878.

Carmen Purdy, who is familiar face in the conservation community said, “We work to multiply the resources that the land provides for all living things, including us.”  Each summer The Nature Trust coordinates youth crews in the Kootenays. Their job includes creating safe access, posting signs and removing understory and thinning trees to promote the growth of grasslands for wildlife forage.

Next year’s “Fore The Nature Trust” golf tournament will be held on May 13, 2010 at the Riverside Golf Course at Fairmont.

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a leader in protecting B.C.’s natural diversity of plants and animals through the acquisition and conservation of critical habitats and other areas of ecological significance.

Along with our partners, The Nature Trust has invested more than $63 million to secure over 61,000 hectares (150,000 acres) of critical habitat throughout British Columbia.
